October

“I wonder how long we have left”

I take a quick glance at my watch. I know I’m out of time. I look at you and back at my watch again.
“It’s okay we still have time” I say. You don’t believe me though. “Really?” you ask. “Yeah” I smile.

“Well, time does move slowly here” you say. You nod your head to my side and then towards the other. Your eyes meet mine. I offer you a smile as you gaze away blushing.

“I have a thing for Octobers” I say. “It’s cold but not chilly. You can watch the cherry blossoms. And if you stick long enough, you’ll get to see the entire lake turn purple. They say the leaves fall five centimeters per second. I guess that’s how slow time moves here” I add.

“But then it’ll touch the ground and it’ll end like all things do. Time won’t turn back again” you look hurt. I think your eyes speak more than your words.

“Maybe that’s the beauty of it. So that we can meet again; You & me, 26 years later!” I say.

A strong wind passes us by. It’s getting colder. You rub your hands together. A petal falls down and gets stuck on your hair. I reach for it.

You turn towards me and grab my hand between both of yours. “Promise me!” You say. Your pupils dilate; your pulse elevated. But my heart’s beating stronger than yours.

“I promise” I say.

“But for now, we have until October ends!”
